  Welcome to the Highway Department

The Highway Department is under the direction of the Williams County Engineer and is responsible for maintaining 396 miles of county highways and 309 bridges longer than 10 feet in clear span.

The highway department currently employs 28 persons including support staff in the dispatch and safety office.

On January 18, 2007 the Williams County Board of Commissioners adopted by resolution a "Special Hauling Permit Policy".  The "Manual For Issuance of Special Hauling Permits" and related forms can be downloaded in the box to the right.

This is obviously the season that we are anticipating snow and ice removal.  Our current fleet of snow plows consists of 5 single axle dump trucks and 10 tandem axle dump trucks.  We have six (6) new tandem axle dump trucks in the fleet.  During a normal snow event, we have thirteen (13) snow plow routes.  Each route gets covered approximately 3 times in a normal work day.  When we experience a more severe snow event, we break the crew into two (2), twelve (12) hour shifts, so that the snow plowing operation is around the clock.

The highway crew during 2005 has started to make our own precast concrete catch basins, and will do more of this type work as time progress.  Ultimately, the highway department will make our own concrete bridge beams and concrete box culverts to stretch the budget dollars farther.

The above forms are available for download and filling out on your computer.  You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader (Free Download), version 6.0 or higher.

A tandem axle semi-tractor and dump box was purchased in 2005.  This will allow the highway employees to haul the stone that will be required for 2006 construction projects.  This is a two fold benefit to the Engineer’s budget;  Employees are utilized in a very efficient manner and the cost of the stone is less.  Currently, almost half of the stone required for the 2006 chip seal program has been stockpiled at various locations throughout Williams County.
